Writing History in the Anthropocene

چکیده
At an international scientific meeting held in 2000, the NobelPrize-winning atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen became increasingly frustrated by the repeated use of the term “Holocene” to describe the earth’s most recent geological epoch. “After the term Holocene was mentioned yet again,” one observer recounts, Crutzen became “visibly agitated” and then “interrupted” the session. “‘Stop using the word Holocene,’” he exclaimed. “‘We’re not in the Holo cene any more. We’re in the. . .the. . .the. . .[searching for the right word]. . . the Anthropocene!’” Writing in Nature two years later, Crutzen argued that Homo sapiens had acquired geological agency: humans have become a geophysical force and are now making inscriptions into the fossil record that will be legible for millions of years. These geologic-scale impacts include massive transformations of the planet’s land surface, the damming and diversion of major rivers, the mass extinction of species, and ongoing alterations to the atmosphere that have led to the accelerating crisis of climate change. For these reasons, Crutzen declared the end of the Holocene, which began approximately 11,700 years ago, and christened the Anthropocene as its “human-dominated” successor. Since Crutzen’s announcement, the “Age of Humans” has been widely debated by scientists and environmentalists, profiled in major media outlets such as National Geographic and the Economist, and even become the main subject for three new scientific journals. At this point, the concept is still slippery and imprecise. Its proponents

The Anthropocene: conceptual and historical perspectives.
The human imprint on the global environment has now become so large and active that it rivals some of the great forces of Nature in its impact on the functioning of the Earth system. Although global-scale human influence on the environment has been recognized since the 1800s, the term Anthropocene, introduced about a decade ago, has only recently become widely, but informally, used in the globa...
متن کاملThe Anthropocene: a new epoch of geological time?
Anthropogenic changes to the Earth's climate, land, oceans and biosphere are now so great and so rapid that the concept of a new geological epoch defined by the action of humans, the Anthropocene, is widely and seriously debated. Questions of the scale, magnitude and significance of this environmental change, particularly in the context of the Earth's geological history, provide the basis for t...

متن کاملCan the Nonhuman Speak?: Breaking the Chain of Being in the Anthropocene.
The fact that nonhuman animals share the power of communication, plus the likelihood that some share our capacity for ideation, demands reevaluation of why human ideas matter, and especially whether they adequately convey a sense of our place within the rest of nature. Nonhuman beings and phenomena may be intrinsically unhuman, but are not necessarily less important than us. Analysis of this di...
متن کاملGlobal Health in the Anthropocene: Moving Beyond Resilience and Capitalism; Comment on “Health Promotion in an Age of Normative Equity and Rampant Inequality”
There has been much reflection on the need for a new understanding of global health and the urgency of a paradigm shift to address global health issues. A crucial question is whether this is still possible in current modes of global governance based on capitalist values. Four reflections are provided. (1) Ecological–centered values must become central in any future global health framework. (2) ...
